1- hypoid gear
Simple gear
Simple gears are the most common type of gear. They have smooth teeth and mount on parallel axes. In the past, many simple gears were used to produce very large reduction gears. Simple gears are used in many devices. Like electric screwdrivers, oscillating sprinklers, alarm clocks, washing machines and tumble dryers, but we will not find many in our cars because simple gears can be really noisy. Whenever the gear engages one gear with another gear, the gears collide and this impact produces a loud noise, as well as increases the pressure on the gear. To reduce noise and pressure on the gear, most car gears are spiral.
Spiral gears
When two gears engage on the helical gear system, the contact starts at the end of one of the gears and gradually expands as the gear rotates until the two gears are fully engaged. Gradual engagement forces the helical gears to operate more slowly and gently than the simple gears. For this reason, helical gears are used in the gearboxes of almost all cars. Due to the angle of the gears in the helical gear, they create an axial load when the gears engage. Devices that use helical gears have bearings that can hold this axial load. An interesting point about helical gears is that if the angles of the gears are correct, they can be mounted on a vertical axis to adjust the angle of rotation to 90 degrees.
Cone gear
The conical gear is used when the axis of rotation needs to be changed and is usually mounted on 90 degree axes but can be designed to work just as well at other angles. The teeth on the conical gears can be straight, spiral or arched. The gears of flat conical gears actually have the same problem as the gears of a simple gear, which, when each gear engages, strikes the corresponding gear at that moment, just like a simple gear. The solution to this problem is to curve the gear teeth. These helical teeth engage just like helical teeth in that the contact starts at one end of the gear and extends exponentially across the tooth. In flat and helical conical gears, the axles must be perpendicular to each other and also on a plane. If we extend the two axles behind the gears, they will intersect. Arc gears, on the other hand, can engage axles on different planes (opposite axes). This feature is used in the differential of many cars. The large conical gear, the differential, and the small inlet gear (penion) are both arcuate (hypoid). This allows the inlet pinion to mount below the axis of the large conical gear. The figure above shows the input penion engaged with a large conical gear in the differential. It is lowered when the drive shaft of the car is connected to the input penion. This means that the drive shaft does not take up space in the passenger compartment and creates more space for passengers and cargo.
